the lost room
The Lost Room (Wikipedia) - Did anyone see this show? It sounds pretty interesting, but I've not yet found it through iTMS. Oddly enough The Dresden Files first episode was offered as a free download through iTMS, but I've been watching too much Carnivale to get to it yet.

“tentacle”...?
Watch the British-English versions of Apple’s famous “I’m a Mac / I’m a PC” advertisements. Or, hey, the Japanese ones. (slashdot)
Ryu ga Gotoku
Takashi Miike’s new movie adaptation of Sega’s Yakuza (Japanese title: “Ryu ga Gotoku”) will open soon in Japan. I will be seeing this in a theater! (tokyopia)

kill the creeps
Special weapons, waves of creeps, research new weapons technology and use them against an unrelenting horde of creeps, all in one flash game. It’s reminiscent of when you turtle long enough to get a good base built in Warcraft or Starcraft, but without all that whining from your opponents. (thanks, TimK!)

日本で初めて、マクドナルドにメイド。アキハバラデパート店の閉店で. Just as it says on the package: Akihabara’s McDonalds now has a maid café theme.
Warning: A couple of the anime figurine advertisements on the page are NSFW.

they might be cool
They Might Be Giants is one of my favorite bands, and I love their attitude about online music. They give away a new piece of free music on their website every couple of weeks. It's password protected against file spider robots, but that information comes in the same weekly newsletter that announces when a new song is up. They've also got their own podcasts, as well as a streaming, flash-based “clock radio” applet that plays any of three TMBG-based-or-inspired radio stations, which also cover some of The Johns side project music. They also sell recordings of their concerts; their upcoming show at TED will likely be available through Google Video, if TED’s history is any indication.
Recently TMBG negotiated to electronically distribute their music,
which they sell at a reasonable price, and as no-DRM, non-crippled MP3s. So instead of buying CDs from their label or through iTunes, of which they might see 10% of the sale, I’ll be buying all albums from there from here on out.
But mostly I just wanted to tell you about free, cool music for geekdancing.

flashdrives
Is it any surprise that the list of Top 10 Weirdest USB Drives, Ever includes almost entirely Japanese products? I think I might pick up one of these extremely tiny USB drives, though I won’t be putting it in my ear.

through a scanner, darkly
My friend Kristen says that the movie A Scanner Darkly is uber-fantastic. It hasn’t opened in Japan yet, so in the meantime I’m satisfying myself with the first 24 minutes of the film, viewable at IGN.

island heat (no one killed, so jokes are OK, right?)

Gas cooker blows up island: Well, more like “burns down island” - and it looks less like an island than an aggregation of huts, some kind of gibsonian interstitial zone that had been hyperactively mated with a fire hazard. (via LJ randompictures)
“i have a bad feeling about this.”
George Lucas says he will be getting out of making movies, or at least getting away from making US$200,000,000 blockbusters, which he sees as too large of a gamble. From here on out he plans to make TV shows and movies, because he can make fifty or sixty movies for the same amount of investment. Essentially, he appears to want to focus on quantity instead of quality. Smell that? It's IRONY. As one slashdotter comments, this is “three movies too late.” (slashdot)
Additionally, this comes right on the heels of announcing that Harrison Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas have officially announced that they're working on the next Indiana Jones movie. Color me both confused, and not hopeful.
